Arrest made in weekend shooting in Jasper

Posted

In a press release Wednesday afternoon, Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said an arrest has been made in the shooting that happened in Jasper on Saturday Jan. 11.
Wheeler said Arkansas State Police investigators had filed an affidavit charging 39-year-old Kurt William Gronwaldt II with possession of a firearm by certain persons (felony) and terroristic threatening. That affidavit was signed by a judge on Jan. 14, authorizing his arrest.
Gronwaldt was interviewed and taken into custody today and is being held in the Newton County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Probation and Parole also placed a hold on him for allegedly violating his parole.
“Mr. Gronwaldt came to a residence in Jasper and began acting very erratically, including exposing his genitals, stabbing the wall of the residence with two knives, grabbing and discharging a shotgun and threatening to return to the house and burn it with the residents inside” Wheeler said, adding “the homeowners feared for their lives and took appropriate action to defend themselves. This was a citizen utilizing their Second Amendment rights to protect themselves. A clear case of self-defense.”
Wheeler also said, “I’d like to thank all the agencies involved in this. Their quick response to my deputies asking for assistance made this case be resolved quickly and safely. The Arkansas State Police investigators did a great job and I appreciate the prosecuting attorney’s office for understanding the rights our citizens have in cases like these.”
