Davis L. Henderson was born in 1787 in Chester County, South Carolina. He married Susannah Claiborne around 1809 in Overton County, Tennessee. She was born about 1794 in North Carolina. In 1850, he was farming in Jackson Township, Newton County, and had $350 in personal property.
His two youngest sons, Gabriel and Ishom, were living with him.
Davis was still living in Jackson Township in 1860, but he was alone, so Susannah must have died between the two censuses. This time he was listed as being a minister. He had $600 in real estate and $400 in personal property. He died 10 Oct 1865, though his place of burial is unknown.
The fact that his son, William, died the same day indicates it is likely they were murdered by bushwhackers.
Three of his children remained in Newton County.
Sarah "Sally" Henderson (1813-1853) married Squire Dunn and settled with him in Jackson Township. She gave him eleven children before her death. He would marry again and move to California.
William Henderson (1816-1864) was married twice, first to Elizabeth Pop, who died in Newton County sometime after 1850. He then married Salina (Harp) Cecil. His daughter, "Nancy" Ann Henderson, married James R Vanderpool, with many of her descendants still living in Newton County. William, Frank, and James, his sons, also stayed in Newton County.
Gabriel Clayborn Henderson (1826-after 1882) was married twice, first to Nancy Harp and then to Nancy Lane. His daughter, Nancy, wed Thomas Mefford, and several of her children remained in Newton County.
