GREERS FERRY — Sometimes the shots just don’t fall during a ballgame.

Plagued by turnovers and missed shots, the Ozark Mountain School District Lady Bears watched their season come to an end in the Class 1A State Basketball Tournament in the opening round against Morrilton Sacred Heart, 74-63.

OMSD never led in the game and trailed by as many as 16 points in the third quarter.

Kaleena Ricketts led the Lady Bears in the first quarter including their only buckets of the first five minutes. Jordyn Jackson then drained a long shot from the left wing and Macy Young hit a pair of back-to-back buckets in the post. Brooklynn Baker scored on two shots at the foul line to end the first period and the OMSD squad faced a 23-15 deficit at the first break.

The Lady Bears made a run in the second period but not before Sacred Heart put the score at a 28-15 mark to begin the quarter.

OMSD scored 14 points the rest of the period while the Lady Rebels were held to one field goal and four free throws.

The first six points for the Lady Bears came at the foul line with Young scoring five of those and one from Tara Yocham. Young then scored on a spin move in the post followed by Baker scoring on a putback. Joshanna Middleton added the final two scores of the first half in the post.

At halftime, Sacred Heart’s lead was down to a 35-29 score.

Two field goals were all the Lady Bears could manage in the third frame. Young scored the first with a move in the post while Baker added the second on a steal and a layup. The squad hit five free throws in the third with Middleton taking three and Baker ending the period with the last two.

The Lady Bears had their best offensive output in the final 8 minutes while Sacred Heart shot 12-of-15 at the foul line and tallied 22 points.

A three-point play from Middleton at the 5:19 mark in the fourth put the game at a seven-point difference, down 58-51, but it was as close as the Lady Bears would get the rest of the way.

Middleton scored eight in the fourth along with seven from Baker and five by both Young and Jailyn Jackson.

Sacred Heart moved on to the quarterfinals while the Lady Bears end the season with a 17-12 record.

OMSD was led in scoring on Thursday by Middleton’s 17 points. Young finished with 16 points. Baker added 15 points, Ricketts six, Jailyn Jackson five, Jordyn Jackson three and Yocham one.
