Thinking about weather, I like warm days, even during December. The cold days we have had recently have been rough. Watching the forecast gave me hope since we are going to have some warm days this week but the weekend is going to revert back to cold days again. I am not sure why I am surprised we have cold weather in December! How can we have a white Christmas if it isn’t cold? We even sing about having a white Christmas, so it must be a good thing.

As we celebrate a holiday centered on our gratitude and thankfulness for all the blessings we have been given, we must also reflect on our nation’s history and the significance behind Thanksgiving Day.

As the holiday season approaches, many of us are beginning to think about our shopping lists and where we’ll spend our hard-earned money. There’s no better time to support the small businesses that help make Arkansas such a vibrant place to live. This year, Arkansas was ranked the 3rd best state in the nation to start a small business, according to Forbes. That recognition reflects what many of us already know — Arkansas is a place where entrepreneurs can thrive, innovate, and build stronger communities. Small businesses are at the heart of our state’s economy. With more than 280,000 small businesses representing 99.3% of all Arkansas businesses, their impact is hard to overstate. Nearly half of the state’s workforce — 47.5% — is employed by small businesses. When you choose to shop local, you’re not only supporting those owners and employees, you’re strengthening the economic health of your own community. Local retailers also bring something special to the holiday season. Many offer products made right here in Arkansas or sourced from independent artisans, giving you the chance to share unique, meaningful gifts with family and friends. Supporting these shops means investing directly in the creativity, craftsmanship, and talent of your neighbors. And the benefits go even further.

Thanksgiving was filled with food and fellowship. My family met at Amanda’s house in Fayetteville. Her two kids go to their dad’s family get-together at one and then return to their mom’s house. Elisa, Kara, and Samantha carried chairs, tables and food from Garfield to Amanda’s. There were twelve-fourteen for dinner at five. I didn’t make it. On Tuesday, I started feeling bad and finally on Friday I went to the doctor. It turns out I had pneumonia. I haven’t ever had pneumonia so I thought I might have had the flu, etc. I had been invited to eat out on Friday at noon but of course I didn’t go. Then some friends asked me to join them on Saturday for Thanksgiving dinner. Missed that too! Sunday, I missed church. I had to call the hostess for bridge on Monday so she could call someone to substitute for me. No wonder I try to never be sick. Lots of trouble and I missed some good meals!

LITTLE ROCK – In July, the federal government’s passage of HR1, the Big Beautiful Bill, established the Rural Health Transformation (RHT) Program. The program established $50 billion to be allocated to the States over a ten-year period to alleviate concerns over the cuts to Medicaid in the bill. Half of the funding will be divided equally among the 50 states and the remaining funds will be made available to states through grants distributed by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
