MT. JUDEA — Roof repair on the Deer School was given the go-ahead by the Deer/Mt. Judea School District Board of Education at its May 12 meeting.
The high school building was inspected earlier and damage was identified, most likely the result of hail, said Superintendent Bill Mizaur.
Several roofing companies prepared cost estimates for the repair of the flat roof around the high school. Kirk's Roofing, which has multiple offices in the state, was the low bidder, quoting a price of $273,000. Insurance will cover all but $5,416, Mizaur said.
The bid was accepted.
The board then returned to the matter of establishing a policy on renting school buildings to the public. The board discussed the matter at last month's meeting, particularly regarding the ABC educational building at the Deer campus.
Mizaur worked up a rental agreement proposal and read an added Section 5. "The Deer/Mt. Judea School District supports community service and civic engagement. Therefore non-profit organizations such as volunteer fire departments, civic clubs, funerals and other recognized nonprofit entities may use the facilities at no charge, provided they obtain prior written approval from the school administration, they agree to all the responsibilities outlined in this agreement and they understand that damages or failure to clean may result in the loss of future privileges, or billing for repairs."
The board, however, wanted to set a deposit amount that was both fair and equitable. Mizaur laid out some options to consider and after some discussion the board agreed to set a $50 deposit fee for the use any building on either campus. If the facilities are left clean $25 would be returned.
Keeping on the subject of cleaning facilities, the board met with the owner of David's Custom Cleaning about continuing the contract for custodial services for both campuses. The company asked for a $500 increase to renew the contract for another school year. Board members noted some issues and the owner, David Olivan, of Harrison, pledged to correct them. The board approved the agreement.
The board also took care of some housekeeping of its own approving Arkansas Department of Education assurances for district funds for covered programs under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA).
The Federal Programs Assurances are for Local Education Agency (LEA) use in their process of requesting district funds for covered programs under ESEA and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The LEA's superintendent and board president must provide an original signature to acknowledge their acceptance and compliance with all Federal Program-Specific provisions, requirements, and assurances incorporated into the ESEA as amended by ESSA and IDEA law.
