Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said his office received a 911 call on Saturday, June 21 about an unresponsive 45-year-old man in Jasper. It was later learned the man had a cardiac history.
Newton County deputies, Jasper Police Department, Jasper Fire Department and first responders, Newton County OEM and North Arkansas Regional Medical Center’s EMS service were dispatched. A law enforcement ranger with the National Park Service also heard the call and responded.
Officers arrived on scene within minutes and located a man with no pulse and not breathing. Jasper Police Patrolman Jayson Poole began assisting bystanders with CPR as deputies arrived to assist. Once on scene, Newton County Deputies Aaron Carter and Devan Mills applied an AED, which are carried in Newton County Sheriff’s Office cars, and assisted with CPR and rescue breathing. Newton County OEM and Jasper Fire Department First Responder Shane Kilgore also arrived and assisted with CPR and rescue breathing.

After a few minutes of CPR and the AED applying resuscitative shocks, the man regained a pulse and started breathing. He was transported by ambulance to a helicopter and airlifted to a hospital with cardiac care capabilities.
“I don’t think a lot of people realize how much the law enforcement officers of Newton County do beyond their normal law enforcement duties,” Sheriff Wheeler said. ”The Sheriff’s Office, Jasper PD and the Park Service folks respond to many medical and trauma calls each month. We are all trained in at least basic emergency medical care with several of us being EMTs. We carry and often utilize AEDs as part of our service to our citizens and visitors. This is another great example of everyone from various local agencies working together, utilizing their training and equipment, to literally save a man’s life. A father’s life.”
Sheriff Wheeler continued, “I am always proud of my deputies and the other law enforcement officers, first responders, fire departments, OEM and EMS folks we work with regularly, but I am especially proud of them on this one. Because of their quick and efficient actions, a man went home to his four children ranging in age from 3 to teenagers. It could have easily ended much differently.”
